How to Use NotebookLM Audio Overviews
NotebookLM's Audio Overviews turn your uploaded sources into AI-generated podcast-style conversations. Two AI hosts discuss your material in an engaging, easy-to-follow format. Here's how to get the most out of this feature.
What Are Audio Overviews?
Audio Overviews are AI-generated audio conversations about your uploaded sources. NotebookLM creates a natural-sounding discussion between two AI hosts who explain, debate, and summarize the key points from your material.
Think of it as getting a personalized podcast episode about whatever you're researching — generated in minutes from your own sources.
How to Create an Audio Overview
- Open your NotebookLM notebook with sources already uploaded
- Click the "Audio Overview" button in the notebook
- Select which sources to include (or use all)
- Optionally add a focus prompt to guide the discussion
- Click Generate — it takes 2-5 minutes depending on content length
- Listen directly in NotebookLM or download the audio file
Using Social Content for Audio Overviews
Audio Overviews work with any source you upload — including PDFs converted from social media content. This opens up creative use cases:
- Thread deep dives — convert a viral X thread to PDF, upload it, and get an audio discussion that expands on the key points
- Newsletter summaries — convert 5-10 Substack newsletters to PDF, upload them, and get a podcast-style summary of the week's insights
- Expert roundups — collect LinkedIn posts from multiple experts on one topic and generate an audio discussion comparing their views
- Research briefings — combine articles and threads into an audio briefing you can listen to during your commute

Tips for Better Audio Overviews
- Use focus prompts — tell NotebookLM what to focus on: "Focus on practical frameworks and actionable advice" or "Compare the different perspectives on this topic"
- Curate sources carefully — 5-10 focused sources produce better audio than 30 random ones
- Mix source types — combine threads, articles, and newsletters for richer discussions
- Download and share — audio files can be shared with teammates who prefer listening to reading
- Iterate on prompts — if the first audio doesn't cover what you wanted, regenerate with a more specific focus prompt
